A small house, on purpose
MOSSE is not a factory with a website attached. It is a table, a lamp, a loupe, and someone who has learned to say no to most of what crosses it.
It starts with rejection
A pearl harvest is mostly disappointment. Open a thousand oysters and the great majority give you something misshapen, dull, pitted, or the wrong colour by a shade that only matters if you care. The pearls worth setting are a small fraction, and finding them is not glamorous work. It is hours under a lamp, turning each one, putting almost all of them down.
That is the part of this business we are actually good at. Anyone can buy pearls. The difficulty — and the whole reason a strand costs what it costs — is matching: assembling forty or fifty that agree with one another about size, lustre and overtone, so the eye reads them as one object rather than a queue of individuals.
Why Malaysia
We are based in Shah Alam, Selangor. That matters more than it sounds. Most pearl jewellery sold here arrives finished, in a box, from somewhere else, priced for a market that never sees the maker. Working locally means we set our own pieces, answer our own email, and can tell you what is actually in the thing you are buying — because we were holding it last week.
It also means we are small. There is no showroom, no sales floor, no seasonal collection dictated by a buying calendar. Pieces appear when the pearls for them appear.
What we will not do
We do not bleach pearls to a uniform white, because the colour a pearl grew is more interesting than the colour a chemical gives it. We do not photograph a piece so flatteringly that it disappoints in the hand. And we do not describe a pearl as better than it is — the specification on every product page is the specification, not a sales pitch dressed as one.
If a piece is not right when it reaches you, we would rather have it back than have you keep it out of politeness. That is what the returns policy is for, and it is written plainly for the same reason.
The name
Mosse. Two syllables, no story invented for a brand deck. It is short, it does not sound like anyone else, and it fits on the inside of a clasp.
Talking to us
There is one inbox and one phone, and both reach a person rather than a queue. If you want to know where a particular pearl came from, whether a strand can be restrung, or what a grading term on a product page actually means, ask — those are the good questions, and the answers are not commercially sensitive.
Contact us, or read how we grade if you would rather understand the vocabulary first.
